AI ETHICS & SOCIETY

Sharing research at the intersections of AI, ethics and society

Based at the University of Edinburgh, the AI Ethics and Society group facilitates events exploring societal and ethical facets of artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies, with the kind support of the Edinburgh Futures Institute and the Edinburgh College of Art.

We welcome people of all backgrounds and career stages, with members from Social and Political Sciences, Informatics, Design, Law, Business, Art, and Architecture as well as people from outside the University, prioritising diversity and inclusion of marginalised and critical voices. Our events are designed with input from our audience, and we encourage you to get involved and suggest topics and speakers. Over the semester we organise regular talks, film screenings and reading group sessions for our diverse membership.

In October 2020, we hosted the online conference Critical Perspectives on AI Ethics; featuring four keynotes, in addition to numerous panel talks. Our annual Doctoral Colloquium offers a friendly in-person space for early career researchers to integrate in the local research culture, network, and receive feedback about methods. Our experience established a strong research base, well-reputed both locally and globally, contributing to the open agenda of intersecting challenges and opportunities in light of data-driven AI innovation.

Reading Group

Our regular reading groups give an opportunity to discuss interesting papers from different fields, share multiple perspectives and meet new people working in the area. Each reading group session is usually led by a researcher in the field the paper is in, who gives a short introduction and overview of the text. We welcome anyone who would like to get involved either as participant or leading a session!
